Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint. Sanding, scraping or heat-stripping it can create dangerous dust.
What to do
- Use an EPA-recognized lead test kit or hire a certified inspector
- If lead is present, avoid dry sanding, dry scraping and heat guns
- Keep children and pregnant people away from the work area
- Consider a contractor certified under the EPA's lead-safe program
- Painting over intact lead paint may be an option; follow EPA guidance
See the EPA's lead guidance for homeowners for details. The Modern Nesting isn't paid by any paint brand or store.
